Carmaker MG unveiled two new additions to its all electric line-up, the MG IM5 saloon and the MG IM6 SUV at Goodwood Speed Festival, while Honda also announced its return to the EV market after its exit in 2023.

Both MG models aim to make a step forward in the premium EV segment, offering a cutting-edge design, thrilling performance and value for UK drivers.

The MG IM5 has a smooth, aerodynamic profile and high-tech interior, bringing “sportiness and sophistication” to the electric saloon category, the company said. It is designed to rival the Tesla Model 3 and delivers its performance in three trim levels: Standard (£39,450), Long Range (£44,995) and Performance (£48,495).

Key highlights of the IM5 include:

  • Up to 442 miles of range (Long Range model)
  • 0-62mph in as little as 3.2 second (Performance model with 767bhp)
  • Ultra-fast charging: 10-80% in just 17 minutes
  • Rear-wheel steering, digital chassis and 800V battery architecture for an engaging and agile driving experience
  • A minimalist interior with 26.3-inch panoramic infotainment screen, 10.5-inch central touchscreen, panoramic roof and a 20-speaker sound system

Joining the IM5 is the MG IMG, a mid-size, all-electric SUV built for families and ‘everyday luxury seekers’. It blends coupe-inspired styling with spacious practicality and advanced technology.

Its key features include:

  • 100kWh battery standard across all variants
  • Up to 345 miles of range (expected UK spec)
  • 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds (Performance model with 767bhp dual-motor AWD)
  • Rear-wheel steering, air suspension, and autonomous parking assist
  • Elegant design with flush-fitting door handles, coupe-like roofline, and slim LED lighting
  • Same stunning interior as the IM5, with a 26.3-inch widescreen display, 10.5-inch touchscreen, and panoramic roof

The MG IM6 will be offered in three trims:

  • Long Range – from £47,995
  • Performance – from £50,995
  • Launch Edition – from £52,995

With dimensions of 4,904mm long, 1,988mm wide, and 1,669mm tall, the IM6 rivals some of the most respected names in its segment, including the Skoda Enyaq, Kia EV5, and Tesla Model Y – but at a far more accessible price point.

It’s expected the two models will go on sale in the UK later this year.

Honda launches second EV
Although the name hasn’t been officially confirmed for Europe, it is still known as the Honda Super EV, at least in concept form

Japanese automaker Honda also unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV) prototype at Goodwood Festival of Speed, despite its first EV, Honda e, struggling to gain market share.

The N-One e is another small EV that looks similar to a Japanese-market kei car, with bulging wheel arches that accommodate a wider track width.

Although the name hasn’t been officially confirmed for Europe, it is still known as the Honda Super EV, at least in concept form, with the full name and design expected to be revealed in production later this year.

It’s the first EV Honda has launched since 2023,when its first EV was discontinued. The new ‘Super EV Concept’ is a preview of its return, even though it’s still being shown as a camouflaged prototype. According to Goodwood, it has undergone some feasibility testing in the UK before making its global debut on the Hill.

From its debut, there’s plenty going for it from appearance. It has a box style, which is derived from the Japanese market N-One.

The manufacturer has also promised a ‘fun driving experience’ and the wheel-at-each-corner stance has already heightened expectations.
