The 12 best solar panel installers in the UK 2024

The best solar panel installer with nationwide coverage is Project Solar

We’ve analysed 643 companies to find the best installers in the UK

All these installers are certified by four authorities

If you want to keep the price of solar panels down, you’ll want the installation to be in good hands. After all, a poor installation will only lead to problems further down the line.

But of course, that’s easier said than done. Finding the right solar panel installer for you can be tricky, especially when there are more and more options out there.

Here are some pro-tips from one of the best solar panel installers in the UK, Everyone’s Energy: get quotes from around five different installers, and don’t fall from time-limited deals – they can be a sign that the installer cares more about making a sale than providing you with the best solar panel system to meet your needs.

A good place to start when choosing an installer is looking at their customer reviews on accredited third-party sites. Not everyone has the time or patience to do this however, and it’s easy to become bogged down in the details.

That’s why we’ve done the work for you. Our four researchers spent 30 hours analysing 643 installers across the UK to bring you this definitive list of the best solar panel installers.

These companies come with all the best certificates and highest ratings – because that’s what you deserve.

You can also find the best solar panel installers for your home by using our custom-built comparison tool. Simply fill in this free form, and our trusted specialists will be in touch with quotes.

How did we choose the best solar panel installers?

We began with the view that the best solar panel installers are widely certified and highly rated. Here are the factors we considered, which we’d recommend you think about too.

Accreditations

You deserve a top-quality installer, which means one that’s been assessed and approved by all the major accreditation bodies.

All 643 of the companies we looked into are certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) – which your installer must be for you to receive payments from government-backed initiatives like the Smart Export Guarantee.

We cut this down to the 77 installers certified by the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT), the government-endorsed quality scheme TrustMark, and the Home Insulation and Energy Systems Quality Assured Contractors Scheme (HIES).

Ratings and reviews

It’s crucial to consider how an installer has treated customers who came before you.

The best way to assess this is to research the ratings and reviews they’ve given on independent sites like Trustpilot and Checkatrade.

We’ve measured installers based on their rankings, and we’ve made sure to look at individual reviews to see exactly what customers love (and hate) about each.

We’ve eliminated any company with a ranking under four stars or a low number of reviews, then found the highest-rated installer in each region of the UK.

Experience

Ideally, you want to hire a solar installer with enough experience that they can negotiate any unexpected obstacles with ease.

That’s why we made sure that even when a company on our list is relatively new, its solar panel installers have the necessary experience to provide you with the service you deserve.

For more than a decade, Project Solar has installed top-notch solar panels on homes all over the country.

This centrally located company has carried out over 45,000 solar installations, saving a total of 150,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases – and all while sustaining a fantastic rating.

The average solar panel installer is much younger, at seven years old, and has carried out far fewer jobs.

A massive number of customers on TrustPilot have had their say, and Project Solar’s rating is an impressively high 4.4 out of five.

Pros and cons of Project Solar

Pros

  • More than a decade of experience, a rarity in the solar industry
  • Tens of thousands of successful installation, a testament to over a decade's experience
  • A large number of high reviews, so you can be sure their high rating is an accurate reflection of service

Cons

  • Not a local supplier, which could lead to a longer installation process

Customer feedback

“Project Solar UK has been a great company to deal with. The salesman fully explained what we needed and why.

“He then gave us a report on how our system would perform and what it would generate.

“We had a bit of an issue with the installation due to the electrician being sick, but Project Solar got another electrician to complete the install the next day.

“I’ve already recommended the company to family and friends. The app allows you to see exactly what the system is doing.”

Hertford

In 2020, this London-based company dropped its previous name, GSES Services, for a much more appealing moniker and the slogan “it’s low cost and it’s for you”.

Managing director Jordan Brown has explained that he saw an opportunity to spread the benefits of green energy, saying: “I started Everyone’s Energy with Finn [Rawlings, a director] after seeing the positive feedback from happy customers on their savings.”

Customers have responded with near-perfect ratings – and if you’re worried about solar panel costs, Everyone’s Energy UK has a solution: buy collectively.

The company has partnered with Solar Together, which gets homeowners and local authorities to pitch in for solar panels together, so they can reduce individual costs while sharing the benefits.

Most installers wouldn’t go this far to help its customers – which is why Everyone’s Energy UK more than deserves its spot on this list.

For more information, check out our guide to solar panels in London.

As you may suspect, solar panels are just one of the renewable home improvements carried out by The Eco Roof and Wall Company, alongside insulation and heat pump installations.

With two decades of experience behind this Nottingham stalwart, you can rest easy in the knowledge that its staff know exactly what they’re doing.

One of those staff members, Zane Henson, told The Eco Experts that the company’s family-run setup had been crucial to its success.

“With the big corporate companies, the thing you lose is the personal touch,” he explained.

“Being a family-run business, we make sure each job is given due care and attention, from start to finish.”

This level of dedication is rare among installers, and will make the whole process of adding solar panels to your roof much easier.

Pros and cons of The Eco Roof and Wall Company

Pros

  • Family-run company, assuring a friendly, personal response
  • Two decades of experience, a rarity in the industry
  • Well-versed in a variety of green products, so you can more than one eco-friendly retrofit done with them

Cons

  • Rating could be higher

4.8

County Durham

Let’s be clear: 4.8 is an excellent TrustPilot rating, and even more so when it’s off the back of tens of thousands of Trustpilot reviews.

Many of these reviews come from before PHS Home Solutions launched its 0800 Repair brand, but still, homeowners in the northeast can trust this company.

Its engineers, who have been successfully installing green technology in the area for around 20 years, are continually trained to the newest standards at the company’s in-house academy.

The average solar company doesn’t have a training centre, let alone one where installers can learn from instructors with this much experience.

Pros and cons of 0800 Repair

Pros

  • Incredibly high number of happy reviewers, so there's a higher chance these reviews accurately reflect the service
  • It has an in-house training academy, so you can be sure all their installers are up to scratch
  • Excellent rating, the best rating to number of reviews ratio on our list

Cons

  • Not nationwide, a real shame for such a highly rated company

Customer feedback

“Excellent, very thorough inspection and explained everything in full. Both visits we’ve had have been on time; would recommend highly.”

You can put your faith in Solar Fast, especially as 93% of reviewers have reported having a four or five-star experience.

This is probably because the company uses the best solar panels – which the average company avoids, to cut costs – and values consistency in its installers’ performances.

Pros and cons of Solar Fast

Pros

  • They take care of you, from design to post-job support
  • Values consistent installers, who'll to the job well, and within a set time frame
  • Uses top-tier solar panels, so you can get more electricity out of them

Cons

Cheshire

Warma UK has excellent customer service, and its installers know how to get the job done for a reasonable price – and that’s all reflected by its high rating on Trustpilot.

However, the Cheshire company’s true strength lies in its ability to connect you with solar panel government grants.

If staff can get you some money off your installation, they will – and that’s special. Most installers won’t go the extra mile and do this for you.

Pros and cons of Warma UK

Pros

  • They proactively try to get you government grants, which can save you money
  • Excellent customer service, answer your questions throughout

Cons

  • Not the highest rating on our list, but well above average

Customer feedback

“Very grateful for the installation of solar panels and storage heaters to my property.

“The process was well explained from application to final EPC survey. Communication from Jack and Alex was good throughout.

“There was a delay in getting the funding, but both kept me updated. As soon as the funding was available, the date was booked in for scaffolding to be put up and the installation booked in (within 2 weeks!).

“All contractors/surveyors who came to my property were friendly and respectful.”

When you’ve got a high rating of 4.5 on TrustPilot, you’ve done something right.

Greener Energy Group has won plenty of awards for its sterling work in sorting out renewable installations, but its customer reviews are the best argument to pick this excellent provider.

If you move quickly, you may be able to get a free Project EV electric vehicle charger with your solar panel installation – and even if you just get a quote, the company will still plant a tree.

The average installer doesn’t have this much commitment to green causes.

If you want to find out more about solar panels in Scotland, check out our guide.

Pros and cons of Greener Energy Group

Pros

  • High number of happy reviewers, so you can be sure their high ranking accurately reflects the service
  • It's won multiple awards, a testament to their high standing in the industry
  • Committed to green causes, so you know they're not just in it for the money

“Installation was quick and efficient, staff from initial survey through to sign off were unfailingly helpful and informative.

“One year on, the system has worked faultlessly. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Greener Energy Group!”

This long-established south-coast company has earned a 4.9 rating on Checkatrade, with its quote accuracy and workmanship in particular receiving extremely positive reviews.

And it doesn’t stop there, either. Solum GB installs all types of renewable technologies, including excellent solar panels, and attempts to convince its customers to go green for the best reasons.

Pros

  • Extremely high ratings on Checkatrade
  • Family-run company, assuring a friendly, personal response

It’s tough to survive as a sustainable installer for a decade, but Tile Energy has thrived.

The company proudly offers “down-to-earth advice” on renewable installations that puts it above most installers that are unable to properly explain eco-friendly products to homeowners.

Tile Energy follows this up with a level of quote accuracy, courtesy, and reliability that’s earned it a fantastic 4.8 rating on Checkatrade.

It also has a five-star rating on Which? – and as if that wasn’t enough, Tile Energy will give you a 10-year guarantee on your solar panel installation.

Pros and cons of Tile Energy

Pros

Next steps

By now, you’ll have a good idea of which solar panel installer is right for you.

All that’s left now is to take the plunge and go solar, joining more than a million other homeowners.

That number’s only increasing, too – 60% of UK residents want to switch to renewable energy, according to our latest National Home Energy Survey.

The next step is finding the best deal – that’s where we come in.

Simply pop your details on this free form and let us take the reins. We’ll pass on your details to our professional installers, who will then get in touch with their best prices.

Best solar panel installers: FAQs

No it’s not harder to sell a house with solar panels – in fact, it can sometimes be easier, since solar panels are increasingly popular in the UK. Over two-thirds of Brits would be likely to buy a property that had solar panels, according to our latest National Home Energy Survey.

Having solar panels installed on your roof can increase the value of your property by around 4.1%.

Yes, if your solar panels are connected to the grid, you need to notify your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) that you’ve installed them. You won’t need to worry too much about this, since your installer will usually do this for you.

Energy distributors need to know if you are exporting electricity back onto the grid so that they can manage their energy levels efficiently.

The average cost of solar panels in the UK is £786 per panel, meaning a three-bedroom house will typically pay £7,860 for 10 solar panels.

You can choose to buy more expensive solar panels for higher efficiency levels, which may allow you to reduce the average break-even point of 12.9 years.

The most important thing to check before installing solar panels is the condition of the roof – it needs to be strong enough to hold the weight of several solar panels.

Your installer will do this before beginning the installation. They’ll ask you for your energy usage to calculate how many solar panels you need, and check the orientation and angle of your roof, as this can affect how much energy the panels produce.

For example, solar panels on north-facing roofs produce 20% to 40% less than ones on south-facing roofs.
