Car manufacturer Dacia has unveiled its vision for a new affordable four-seater concept electric vehicle (EV) which it says is inspired by the original Mini, Fiat 500 and Volkswagen Beetle.

Called the Hipster, the EV will weigh less than 800kg and measure 3m long, 1.55m wide and 1.53m tall, making it shorter than any other EV currently on sale. It also has four, full-sized seats and offers up to 500l of boot space when the seats are folded.

Dacia said the Hipster represents a return to essential mobility, offering simple, sustainable and low-cost transport in an age where prices continue to rise.

The EV is designed to show what could be achieved if manufacturers were given space to create small and efficient EVs, and at 20% lighter than its own Spring EV, it’s designed to reduce the car’s lifecycle carbon footprint compared to other EVs.

The company hasn’t revealed the battery size and motor output but it has said the average driver should only have to charge just twice a week based on a journey of around 24 miles.

The car has no built-in screen like most modern cars do, but it does have a dedicated mount for your smartphone; it is also unlocked via an app instead of a key.

Dacia was inspired by the Fiat Panda, Citroen C2 and Land Rover Series I. Dacia said the concept is a response to rising vehicle weights, power outputs and prices driven by ongoing stricter safety and emissions regulations.

The average new car in Europe is said to be 15% heavier and 63% more expensive than it was 10 years ago, while used cars have seen prices rise by 45% since 2010.
