British households are backing heat pumps in a big way, with a record 8,150 applying for Boiler Upgrade Scheme vouchers in July this year, according to government data.
That is a massive 81% increase on June and can be put down to a lot more households who use heating oil and LPG getting hurt by rising fossil fuel prices.
Earlier this year the Boiler Upgrade Scheme was increased by 20%, from £7,500 to £9,000 for the estimated 20,000 households who use heating oil or LPG, who have been hit hardest by the shock to energy markets since the beginning of the US-Iran war in late February. The extra funding for those households will be available until March 2027.
Martin McClusky, Minister for Local Energy and Jobs, said that installing a heat pump is “the best way for people on heating oil to get certainty over their bills and avoid costly spikes in prices”.
“Seeing record numbers in applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is really promising. I would urge eligible billpayers on oil to take advantage of the £9,000 grant to make the switch.”
The new figures come alongside the rollout of plug-in solar, which is legal to buy and install since 27th August.
Rural properties have shown strong demand for heat pumps, with 49% of Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants since scheme launch going to these households and 38% to homes off the gas grid.
Across the country, the Warm Homes Plan will help roll out clean technology to millions, cutting bills and securing thousands of good jobs. This includes low and no interest loans to fund energy efficiency home improvements such as solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps.
