- A quarter of a million households will get help this winter
- Move is part of the government’s expansion of the Warm Homes Discount
- You are eligible if you’re on specific benefits
More than 250,000 families will have their energy bills this winter cut by £150 as part of the recently expanded Warm Homes Discount as the government looks to help households keep costs under control.
In a statement, the government said the discount will be automatically applied to most of the eligible households, without any action necessary, but some might need to provide some information, such as a bill or statement.
In 2024 the government announced plans to expand the Warm Homes Discount to an extra 2.7 million homes – with 900,000 more families with children and 1.8 million households in fuel poverty benefitting.
The best way to cut your energy bills for good is to install clean technology. If you’re interested in grants for solar panels, read out guide.
That means about six million homes in the UK are now eligible for support under the Warm Homes Discount.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the cash injection will help people manage their bills and insisted only clean energy will “get bills down for everyone in the long run”.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband also commented, saying that the government was “determined to tackle energy affordability for families”.

“The only way to bring down bills for good is through the government’s mission to get off the rollercoaster of fossil fuel prices and onto clean, homegrown power,” Number 10 said.
“Further proposals to support families will be announced in the Warm Homes Plan later this year.”
Who is now eligible for the Warm Homes Discount?
The changes made by the government mean that every billpayer on means-tested benefits will now qualify for the Warm Homes Discount. These benefits include:

- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit)
