- 2024 was a record year for the UK heat pump market

Last year saw a 63% increase in hydronic heat pump sales, up from 4% between 2022 and 2023, according to new data from the Heat Pump Association (HPA).
The HPA’s data revealed that the sales of 98,469 hydronic heat pumps were largely driven by an increase in air to water monobloc sales.
There was also a 100% increase in its ‘other heat pump’ category, which includes domestic hot water heat pumps, exhaust heat pumps and integrated hybrid heat pumps.
Charlotte Lee, chief executive of the HPA says this growth profile “reflects the ongoing innovation and investment in broadening the adoption of a diverse range of heat pumps”.
“After a modest 4% growth in sales between 2022 and 2023, this increased level of deployment should provide enhanced confidence to the market that the sector is in a good place to meet expected increases in demand in the coming years.
“The HPA is encouraged by this strong growth, which has been supported by Government schemes, such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Energy Company Obligation Scheme with MCS heat pump notifications accounting for 60% of total sales.”
Latest figures from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero unveiled a 67% jump in the number of applications made to the BUS scheme last year.
This is also further backed by Octopus Energy, who surveyed 1,700 UK homes in which one was installed, and 86% claimed it performed well on January’s coldest days.
Lee added that 2024 was a pivotal year for the UK market, saying the “unprecedented, accelerated growth” reflects the sector’s “dedication and determination to scale up to support the decarbonisation of heat in UK homes and buildings”.
She also urged the government to present “a clear, credible heat decarbonisation transition plan” and “a detailed heat pump installation pathway” to encourage further investment in the sector.
