For episode 11 of Positive Energy, we’re proud to welcome Richard Hauxwell-Baldwin, head of research, policy and campaigns at the MCS Foundation.
Richard joined the foundation in 2021 and has over fifteen years’ experience as a sustainability research, consulting and project management professional. He has worked on smart-home technology projects, including the redevelopment of the London Olympic Park.
The MCS’ goal is to create a carbon-free future “where everyone has access to reliable and affordable renewable energy in homes that are warm and efficient.”
It oversees the MCS standards scheme which certifies the quality of renewable energy across UK homes, giving consumers peace of mind that they’re choosing the low-carbon technology that’s right for them.
In this episode of Positive Energy we spoke to Richard about the opportunities and barriers to the wider adoption of renewable technologies and government policies. This includes what’s changed in the renewables industry within the past 20 years and the current state of the UK’s clean energy sector.
Included are chats about the challenges to the National Grid, Tony Blair’s recent comments on the UK’s net-zero strategy and the views of the general public. Richard explained that in a survey conducted by MCS, over 50% of respondents believe “net zero is happening to us, not with us.”
There’s also insight on the heat pump roll out and how the government is going to reach its target of 600,000 installations by 2028, including needed energy price reform.
