Watch episode 15 of Positive Energy – powered by The Eco Experts, with David Leighton, national distribution sales manager at LG Solutions, in conversation with Sam Pamphilon.

For episode 15 of Positive Energy, we welcomed David Leighton, national heating sales manager, LG Solutions, to dispel common heat pump myths, and talk about the savings homeowners can make by installing heat pumps and other low-carbon technologies.

Leighton brings more than 20 years of experience in the plumbing and heating industry, and now focuses on driving sales and growth for LG’s HVAC and heating products in the UK & Ireland.

In this episode, he explains to host Sam Pamphilon what a heat pump is, how they work, and why they’re important for reducing your carbon footprint and future-proofing your home.

Heat pumps extract energy from the outside air, even at temperatures, as low as -18°C or -20°C, and uses a refrigerant and compressor to heat water for your home.

“If we took a boiler that’s just been installed, they’re roughly 90% efficient, which means that for every £1 of energy you’re buying, you’re actually getting 90p worth of energy,” he said.

“With our heat pump, for example, for every £1 you put in, you’re getting £4 worth of energy back.”

Running costs

While electricity costs in the UK remain high, owing to the ‘Spark Gap’ difference between the price of gas and electricity, energy bill savings may not happen immediately, but as the government looks to reduce our reliance on volatile fossil fuels and increase electricity generation from renewables like wind and solar, the costs of running a heat pump will inevitably come down in the long term.

Common myths

Common myths are also dispelled, including whether heat pumps actually work, concerns about performance in cold weather.

Leighton explained that heat pump technology has been around for over 100 years, and can be used to provide heating and hot water for all types of property.

“Success often depends on working with an experienced heating engineer to assess specific needs, such as insulation or radiator design,” he said.

Leighton also explored the possibility of how heat pumps can work with underfloor heating, and dispelled the most-common heat pump myth of all: whether they are noisy.

We were also able to talk about the potential savings and his top tips for homeowners, including the need to work with an experienced professional and to use the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) when installing a heat pump.
