The Best Home Security Systems

SimpliSafe Bamburgh is the best home security system

Swann Floodlight and Neos SmartCam are the best security cameras

Homes with no security measures are five times more likely to be targeted

It’s crucial to protect your home. To do this, you need to deter burglars, and stop any break-ins as soon as possible.

We’ve therefore based our ratings of security systems on whether they offer state-of-the-art technology, are simple to use, have excellent customer reviews, provide value for money, and come with a top-quality monitoring service.

Systems received a star for each requirement they fulfilled – and the SimpliSafe Bamburgh package came out on top, scoring a full five stars. We could not recommend it more strongly.

Best overall: SimpliSafe Bamburgh (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

the simplisafe bamburgh

This is the system that has it all, and for the relatively low up-front price of £504.

Its hardware is easy to install yourself and comes with innovative features like a broken glass sensor, which can tell you when an intruder hasn’t opened a window or door as much as smashed straight through it.

Crucially, the software is also intuitive and simple to control, whether with the keypad, app, or key fob – and if you do have any questions, SimpliSafe’s customer service is excellent. There’s a reason the company has a 4.5 rating on Trustpilot.

For £19.99 per month, you can also take advantage of SimpliSafe’s monitoring service, providing you with peace of mind for much less than most security firms.

Best feature: How gloriously easy it is to set up – all you’ll need is a ladder.

Best for premium users: Verisure (⭐⭐⭐⭐½)

verisure's full monitored alarm system

Verisure is the best premium offering, for users who can afford to spend a bit more for especially cutting-edge technology with their monitoring service.

You don’t need a ZeroVision fog barrier, which promises to get rid of intruders in 45 seconds by making the air impossible to see through – but it is an innovative, effective tool.

Verisure also offers to send guards to secure your home for two days after an attempted break-in, if you’re away, and uses a SIM card that ensures you’ll still be protected if your wifi and local 3G or 4G go down. If you get a good deal price-wise, it’s a fantastic package.

Best feature: Its extremely modern, unique hardware.

Best if you work from home: Yale Sync Smart Home Alarm Family Kit (⭐⭐⭐⭐)

yale alarm system

When it comes to systems that don’t include a monitoring service – and therefore leave the responsibility for your home’s safety up to you – Yale’s offering is the most complete.

As well as two motion detectors and two entry sensors, the package comes with a smoke detector, a dummy siren, and a smart plug for turning any simple electrical tool into a smart device.

For £400, you’ll struggle to find a more enticing deal.

Best feature: It’s an all-round package with no flaws – apart from its lack of monitoring.

Best for renters: Arlo Ultra (⭐⭐⭐½)

arlo ultra camera

If you want to use a cutting-edge technology but don’t have a large family home to protect, an Arlo Ultra camera is a good option.

It films in 4K resolution, comes with a spotlight and a 100dB siren, covers a 180° field of vision, and films in colour in the dark from up to eight metres away.

At £450, it’s decent value, but not the best on this list, which is why it only gets half a star for cost-effectiveness.

Best feature: Its stunning night vision.

Best for technophobes: Somfy One+ (⭐⭐⭐½)

somfy one+ camera

Don’t worry. If you hate dealing with fiddly new technology but keep an eye on your home, the Somfy One+ camera has you covered.

It’s simple to set up, comes with night vision of six metres and a 1080p resolution, and includes a 90dB siren. You can also use the key fob to arm and disarm it if you don’t want to rely on the app, and it can be made to switch off when it spots you.

You’ll also pay just £349, which is good value – and you can always add Somfy motion detectors if you fancy it.

Best feature: It’s just a camera. Set it up and let it do its thing.

We have joint winners in this category: the Swann Floodlight and Neos SmartCam.

We judged security cameras on their ease of use, value for money, and technological capabilities – their resolution, night vision, and siren, as well as extras like floodlights.

The five cameras above are the best models on the market, hands-down. They’re all smart, all have a resolution of at least 1080p, and all come with two-way audio – so you can scare off any intruders, as well as hear them.

“Investing in high quality security solutions from a trusted and reliable home security brand can help you to save a lot of money and stress in the long run.”

– Hazel Whittingham, senior product manager for Yale

Which one should you get?

The Neos SmartCam is the best option if you’re renting a small place, and simply want to know what’s going on inside your home at all times.

However, if you own a large property – or just a big garden – you should seriously consider the Swann Floodlight, as it’ll be able to shine a light on every dark corner.

The Canary Pro is a more upmarket indoor camera. It comes with a siren and 30 days of cloud storage, and is capable of covering a wider field of vision than Neos’s model (147° to Neos’s 110°).

The Ring Stick Up Cam Battery and Nest Cam IQ Outdoor are both excellent outdoor models.

Nest’s machine has a better resolution, field of vision, and night vision – plus it comes with facial recognition software – but the Stick Up Cam offers 25 days more cloud storage, a siren, and costs £240 less.

We’ve given Ring’s model the edge as it has fantastic value for money, but it depends on what you choose to prioritise.

Best cheap home security system

SimpliSafe Starter

21 entry sensor,
1 motion detector

SimpliSafe’s starter package is the best budget option, when you simply judge by how much high-quality hardware you can get for just just £209.

With two 720p cameras, a hub that incorporates a 95dB siren, an entry sensor, and a motion detector, you’ll have an excellent setup for a flat or small home.

And for £12.99 per month – a ridiculously low price by industry standards – you can add a monitoring service, so your home is constantly watched over.

SimpliSafe has wonderful customer reviews too, with a Trustpilot score of 4.5 out of 5, so you can rely on the company to sort out any problems.

You could even use it as a trial run, since SimpliSafe will give you a full refund if you send the package back within 60 days.

Best home security for renters

Ring Stick Up Cam Battery

ResolutionNight visionSirenPrice

We’ve come to this conclusion by judging models and packages on their value for money, technological capabilities, ease of use – and how simple it is to pick it up and move home.

The Ring Stick Up Cam Battery is the perfect example of a smart, wireless, versatile camera which can protect your home for an extremely reasonable price – and which will quickly adapt to a change in scenery.

You can choose whether to place it inside or outside, where it will provide a 1080p live feed with a 115° viewing range, 10x zoom, and nine metres of night vision. Its built-in 110dB siren makes it a complete security package.

We would also recommend paying £2.50 per month for 30 days of cloud storage. It’s an extremely generous price, and comes with the invaluable option to cancel at any time – a must if you’re renting.

The market is full of rapid technological advances and fantastic value for money, if you know where to look.

You should now be aware of all the best home security systems out there, as well as the packages which suit your home specifically.
