Whether you’re a small manufacturing firm that produces specialist types of waste, or a large multi-site restaurant chain that requires nationwide waste collection, working with a waste contractor that’s right for your business is essential to ensure your trade waste is managed in a cost-effective and time-efficient way.

When finding a waste management company for your business, make sure that you review exactly what waste services you need. To help you do this, have a think about the following questions:

• What waste do you produce? Does a contractor collect and dispose of this type of waste?

• How much waste do you produce? Does a contractor offer big enough containers?

• How often does your waste need collecting? Can a contractor collect it frequently enough without your waste piling up?

• Does a contractor offer additional services that you can take advantage of (e.g. free waste audits)?

• What’s a contractor’s reputation like? Has its customer service team received praise or a lot of complaints?

• How much has a contractor quoted you? Could you get a cheaper price elsewhere?

• Does a contractor care about the environment? Does it aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill?

What to Look Out for When Choosing a Trade Waste Management Company

Failure to comply with the waste management regulations set out by the UK government can cost your business money and its reputation. It’s your responsibility to ensure that the waste contractor your business works with has the right legal documentation to collect and dispose of your waste. Working with an illegitimate company can mean you’ll face fines or even time behind bars. The 2 main legislative documents a waste management company should have are: a waste transfer license and a waste transfer note.

Waste Transfer Licence

A waste transfer license is a permit obtained from the Environment Agency (EA) that allows a person (or company) to legally transport waste from your business premises to another premises (e.g. a landfill site). You can check if a waste management company is a licensed waste carrier by checking the Waste Carriers Register on the EA website.

Waste Transfer Note

Every time your business’ refuse is collected by a waste management company, you must complete a waste transfer note (WTN). This is a document that details the transfer of waste from one person to another, and allows those who handle your waste to know exactly what it is so that it can be managed appropriately. You must keep copies of all WTNs for at least 2 years.
