In April 2012, the European Space Agency announced that they has signed a contract with Stevenage based technology providers Astrium, to construct a Solar Orbiter due for launch in 2017.
To be built at the company's laboratory in Gunnels Wood Road in the town, the craft will be used to study the impact of solar flares and magnetic fields on climatic conditions on Earth and how they may affect the use of satellite and other technology.
